Still recovering from the OC Expo ...

... but, boy was it a lot of fun! There are some of the pictures I took with my Dad's camera on Saturday, or ones he took ... I know Krewmember Naomi took some, too, but I haven't gotten those back yet. I was just too darned busy to take any photos! Thanks to everyone for helping to make Kits2Remember's first Scrapbook Expo such a success! I taught two classes each day and my acrylic album class sold out each day. While my acrylic wall decor class didn't sell out, I always had close to 30 people in it, so not too shabby for my first time teaching at an Expo. It seemed like everyone had fun in class, and most importantly, LEARNED something.

I want to thank my volunteer Krewmembers who were kind enough to offer up their time and scrapbooking expertise. You might have seen or met some some of them if you stopped by my booth or took a class from me. Having them around really made everything go so much smoother! So, a huge thanks to: Kathi, Cheryl, Tiffany, Lori, Jodie, Inez, Monica, Martina, Liz, Jennifer, Angie, Stacy, my sis-in-law Gina, my DH Rodney, my Dad Mark, for watching my kids, and to my Mom Nancy, who happily ran my cash register and credit card machine (despite how many fits they gave her!).

I am looking for some responsible volunteer Krewmembers for the Pleasanton, CA, Scrapbook Expo next month, March 14 and 15. You'll get some class kits, a Krew T-shirt, a goodie bag with acrylic product, free admission the day you work, plus some other odds and ends. I could also use some burly men to help me haul stuff in on the 13th and haul stuff out the evening of the 15th. No more than two hours or so each day. Kits2Remember Design Krew Member Call

Growing a successful business is taking a lot of my time and I am just not able to create as many high-quality project samples as I would like. That said, Kits2Remember is looking for four fantastic designers to launch the K2R Design Krew.
Submission Deadline: March 1, 2008

The designers I seek must love the idea of working with mini books and home décor projects. Interest in acrylic albums and shapes a must!

As a member of the K2R Design Krew, I ask that you:

1. Agree to a six-month commitment of showcasing K2R products.

2. Continue to meet short, but reasonable, deadlines for stunning, unique projects prior to consumer shows and for the idea gallery on the K2R web site.

3. Enthusiasm for clear "acrylic" scrapbooks and projects and a willingness to help promote Kits2Remember.

5. Post your creations to online galleries, blogs, and promote the product on message boards.

6. Submit your work for publication to trade/consumer magazines on a regular basis.

What will you get as a member of the K2R Design Krew:

1. Free product!

2. Your bio and creations on our web site.

3. The opportunity to be the first to see and use great new products!

Please submit 3 projects that showcase your favorite work! Your projects do not need to be created for this call. Altered albums and acrylic album designs would be helpful, but other paper crafting projects would be fine. Just give us a sampling of your best creations. Please limit your files to 150kb each.

1. Scrapbook resume.
2. Have you been published and if so, what magazines?
3. Do you have a blog and what online galleries do you post to?
4. What are your past and current design team commitments?

What else you need to know:

You may be on other design teams, but please keep in mind that before consumer shows, you will have very tight deadlines. Also, projects created for K2R may not be used for other design team submissions. Make sure that you can commit to your Kits2Remember responsibilities.

The new design team will be announced in March on the K2R blog. Kits2Remember reserves the right to terminate the relationship with a member of the Design Krew if responsibilities are not being met.

K2R's first Scrapbook Expo!

Well, the booth is up and I guess we're ready ... not much time to write tonight though! Kits2Remember will be debuting at its first Scrapbook Expo in Costa Mesa, CA, tomorrow! If you are in the area, be sure to stop by ... I saw some great stuff in other booths, too! As for K2R, I have two new acrylic album kits up for sale, pictured above. Not to mention plenty of acrylic, BragTags, Clear Scraps shaped acrylic albums and so much more! Plus, if you're up for a class, there might be space in one of my two classes. When you get there, look for the 9 a.m. Crystal Clear Home Decor class and the 10:30 a.m. "Why I Love You" 6 x 6 album class. There is actually no title on the book, so it can be used for any occasion! Hope to see some of you out there!

CHA generosity to the max ...

I went back to CHA today with my quilter Mom, Nancy, and I had a great time showing her around the show while I finished my "shopping." (Details on my purchases at a later date!) While we were there, I was the lucky recipient of several fabulous prizes: Making Memories rewarded me twice for wearing my "slice" t-shirt, once randomly with a mini stapler (it was GREEN! K2R color!) and four packs of colored staples, and once with a triple-bag prize of some of their latest product in their 2 p.m. raffle. They also gave away a ton of their new design-cutting tools, the Slice. Then, off to the Pazzles booth at 4 p.m. for their raffle. I have one of the new Inspirations on order and was so pleased to win one of their Tutto bags! So fun!

Giveth the CHA Swag!!!

Collecting cool stuff from scrapbook companies is so much fun! While I did place some orders, like Basic Grey Boxer (after all, I DO have three boxer dogs!), foam stamps from Pebbles Inc. (any of you looking for the heart or flower stamps I used in recent classes, you'll want to check the Kits2Remember site, cuz they'll be available soon!), new products from Zutter and Theresa Collins, etc., I did collect even more catalogs to peruse over the next few days and some fabulous free stuff! Take a look at the photo above for a sampling.

Some thoughts on CHA so far:
1) 'Tis the season for industrial-strength corner rounders. Both Zutter (Round-it-All)and Around the Block (The Paper Gator) are releasing corner rounders that can cut through chipboard, amoung other things.
2) Provocraft has fabulous giveaways, can't miss bright green shirts and a hot product in the Cricut, but the cheer is noticably strained when the crowd is asked if they love Provocraft.
3) Odd discovery: McGill Inc. (as in great punches) sells gavels. Order in the crop room!
4) Speaking of punches, Making Memories has a new automated die cutting system that "can fit in the palm of your hand," called the Slice. I saw it demo-ed, and it looked very interesting, since their cartridges (similar to cricut cartridges) match their Noteworthy and Animal Cracker lines. But is it a "slice" of heaven? I'd have to try it myself.
5) It's fun to see 'Lil Davis back. The line seems to fit well with Fiskar's other lines, including a new vintage-inspired one, Kimberly Poloson.
6) Basic Grey's new lines are beautiful. I still must maintain that they are my over-all favorite paper line, kind of like Aerosmith is my all-time favorite music group. Sure there will be spurts of papers that I enjoy, like Top 40 hits or an occasional sound track, but there are only a select few that are timeless classics in my stash. BG is one of them.
7) The fresh-brewed iced tea at the concession stands is quite tasty, if there are any fellow iced tea fans out there ...

CHA Day 1 Make and Takes

I am not a big "make and taker," but I had to stop and use some of the new (and old!) product from some of my favorite manufacturers ... Heidi Swapp, with the black and white lines (card) she has been blogging about, Luxe Design's new papers (luggage tag), Imaginisce's flowers and company brads, and a cute gum ball part favor from Fiskars. Crops2Remember partner and fellow Fiskateer Naomi was the one hosting the Fiskars make and take when I stopped by. Plus, I just happened to get there in time for a big Fiskateer T-shirt signing party! Lead Fiskateer Stephanie was handing out fabulous Fiskateer T-shirts that showed off our Fiskateer Pride ... not to mention your number (#743 here!). I got these Fiskateers to sign my shirt: #343, 1794, 859, 2074, 839, 397, 84, 393 and 99! Hopefully I can collect some more before CHA ends. The man, the myth, the legend ....

No, I am not talking about Rodney, the King of the K2R Krew ... more like Tim Holtz, the distressing darling of the scrapping world. Rodney and I were fortunate enough to get seats in his sold out "Distress-a-palooza" class at the Craft and Hobby Association's World's Fair at the Anaheim Convention Center Saturday. While I was more familiar with the the Ranger Industries' line of Distress products, both Rodney and I were introduced to new applications for several distressing media, including embossing powder, crackle paint, distress ink, acrylic paint dabbers, the fabulous Tonic scissors and more! We had a blast working with the acrylic fragments and Bazzill chipboard to create the decorated mirrors seen above. Can you guess whose project is whose? Oh, and we got to KEEP the products listed above (three ink pads, embossing powders and crackle paints each!) AND Tim handed out CDs of his paper line that was recently discontinued ... well worth the $30 ticket price! A helpful hint Tim gave us: When using the crackle paint, a medium layer of paint works great. Also, for the best results, let the crackle paint start to crackle before you turn a heat source on it!

Vegas, Baby!

Wow! I am having a blast here ... way more fun than I expected! OK, let's start with the good things:
1) Ali Edwards' class on teaching and promoting scrap classes, Life Art 101. Great class! I was proud to see that I was already doing a number of the things she suggested but was thrilled to walk away with a lot of fresh ideas for making my classes even better. One tidbit I think I will try: spend a few minutes before each class to pull a few of my favorite things from the store shelves and share these during the class. That way people become educated on new supplies and tools, and, if the items happen to be purchased that night, the store benefits, too, with the sales. Ali and CK Media were also kind enough to give each attendee her book: "Life Artist," which she autographed.
2) Candice Stringham's portrait photography class, Exposing Your Creative Vision. This contributing editor for Creating Keepsakes magazine knows her photography and knows how to teach it simply so others can understand how to use their cameras to get the best photos of people of all ages. A handy tip: Get rid of double chins by doing the "chicken neck" maneuver - stick your head forward from the neck ... you'll look funny from the side in real life, but because photography is two dimensional, the image will flatten and you'll look slimmer on paper! Whoo-hoo! And I'm all about looking thinner! Of course, the photo of Ali E and I was taken the day BEFORE I knew this trick...
3) Meeting fabulous people! I met a lot of guys and gals like me - entreprenuers with fledgling, but promising businesses. A couple of the ones that intrigued me were Scrapblog and Digital Scrapbooking Files.
4) Playing with the "Big Boys." Just about every country was represented by exhibitors or attendees at the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) trade show. It is clear why so many people in the scrapbooking industry think scrapbooking should join in with PMA. Huge companies were showing off their newest and most innovative photo technologies: Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Pentax, Epson, HP, Samsung, Sony ... the list goes on. But there were also plenty of smaller companies that caught my attention, many of which would blend in with traditional scrapbooking very well! But more on them later.
5) Shopping! I placed a few orders for *new* product! I have some new idea books for acrylic projects coming from Design Originals, so watch for those soon. I also ordered some of the *new* Wild Asparagus paper from My Minds Eye, as well as some from their Street Market line. This will be for kits/classes coming up for the spring/early summer! Also, K2R will soon carry the Crop-a-dile Big Bite (look for it in March!) and all sorts of Gromlets to use with it. And good news about the case! If you bought your Big Bite on HSN and have screw-off feet, We R Memory Keepers has redesigned the Big Bite since then to have slide-off feet that can be taken off in a matter a moments so the Big Bite can be easily stored away in it's case. 6)No one was there! Because so many store owners and teachers decided to stay home and only go to CHA next weekend, I was able to chat with the manufacturers longer, and find out even more about their services and products. Plus, I was able to chat with Ali E without rushing away so the next person could have their time with her, plus I got to know CK editor Brian Tippetts a little bit while I waited between classes.

The bad things:
1) No one was there! Because manufacturers pulled out by the dozens, there were only about 6 of them in the "MemoryTrends" section of the show (also known as PSRO - Professional Scrapbooking Retailers Organization - division of PMA). The nu,mber of classes was significantly reduced, as well, but the MT organizers are refunding me half of my money because of that. But still, as I looked around PMA as a whole, I really think the scrapbooking industry missed the boat on the show. There is a lot of potential here to cross-promote between the different photo industries (in fact I am in negotiations with a few companies now to bring new ideas around). But, on the flip side, I know it is tough for manufacturers and attendees to set up and go to one show and then have to turn around and be somewhere else less than a week later. PMA is in Macrh in 2009 and while I do not yet know the dates for CHA, hopefully there can be enough time so that more people can do both shows.
2) There was a lot of miscommunication between Memory Trends, PMA and me as an attendee. It took me almost two hours to figure out where I was supposed to be Thursday with what paperwork because the info desks all sent me to different places that were wrong. In fact, when I finally got to my first class (Ali's) without a moment to spare, I did not have the tickets I was supposed to have. Thank goodness they let Rodney and I in, anyway, and we straightened it all out later.

But, for the most part, I must say that I am pleased I came to the show. I have made a lot of contacts, seen a lot of SoCal friends and learned, not only about scrapbooking, but about the photo industry as a whole. And I am very much looking forward to CHA next weekend so I can compare and contrast the two.

I'll be teaching 4 nights in a row next week!

If I thought I was busy in January, Februray is looking MUCH worse! Next week I am teaching Monday thru Thursday and then take one night off, Friday, before gearing up for CHA! At least CHA is in my own backyard, so no hotel stays or anything. Oh, and no dragging around gridwall! LOL ... Anyway, on tap for classes this coming week:

I've been tagged!

Oh, no, not again ... Not that I mind being tagged, it's finding people that I don't think will hate me for tagging THEM! And Donna Salazar was the instigator again! She didn't tag ME, but she tagged NAN who, in turn, tagged ME! I am supposed to post what I am doing right now ... I am doing my nightly ritual ... eating popcorn and drinking the 0 calorie carbonated water from Wal-mart, one of the few things I go there to buy! Black Cherry flavored, BTW. Oh, and I just finished packing up for Memory Trends in Vegas. Looking forward to it, although I am sad to see that it doesn't appear to be a popular event. But I will write up a full report later ... LOL! And as for who I am going to tag, I have no idea ...

On tap for the week of Jan. 28 ...

Whew! Three weekends in a row of dragging gridwall around ... I am ready for a break! But the shows and crops have been a lot of fun! Rodney and I just got in from Ontario, CA, this evening, after vending for Scrapbook Alley, which was housed with the Home Improvement and Backyard Living Expo at the convention center. While the show was slow and scrappers weren't plentiful, the ones who stopped by were wonderful! We had a lot of chatty croppers and a big THANK YOU to friends, family and past class attendees who stopped by the K2R booth this weekend. I really appreciate your support!

As for upcoming events for the week, I will be teaching My "Clearly in Love" 6 x 6 acrylic album at Scrappin' in the Hills in Anaheim Hills from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29. Then, I am off to Memory Trends in Las Vegas Thursday through Saturday! There has been a lot of discussion in the scrapbook industry as to which trade shows to support and why, and I want to make up my own mind. The big question: Should scrapbooking support the crafting side of the hobby, with the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA), or should the industry join forces with the photography industry and become more involved with PMA? The decision made by the scrapbooking industry as a whole could really affect the future success of scrapbooking as we know it. Sooo, I am spending a not-so-affordable weekend in Las Vegas at Memory Trends and the PMA trade show in the hopes of coming away with a lot of great info, contacts and more. I'll give a review once I return!

Plus, Jessica will also be at the Heirloom Stamp Show in Riverside, in the Auntie Amy booth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday! Come by, say hi and do the exclusive make and take. This show promises to be a lot of fun!

Scrapfest San Diego

Rodney and I had a great time at ScrapFest San Diego this past weekend! This was the first year of this annual event and organizer Tracy Johnson and her DH Brad, were really working hard to put on a great crop. While the event was sold out, attendance was a little low thanks to ... football! The Chargers had made it to the playoffs so a lot of the ladies planning to attend Sunday bailed out to watch the Chargers unfortunate loss. However, the K2R booth was often busy as we spread knowledge about working with acrylic, the Bind-it-All, Clear Scraps, the Crop-a-dile, Ranger acrylic paints and Stickles with anyone who happened to stop by! We passed out our *new* K2R buttons and had a great time meeting wonderful people. There was really a lot of friendly support from not only the croppers, but the other vendors, as well, encouraging me in my new business venture. The scrappy ladies were kind to Rodney (one even complimented him on his cute butt!) and gave him kudos for being such a great DH. I have to agree ... especially after he got me what every gal deserves - her own tiara from Diva Danielle! So now I have been crowned the K2R Kween! We really had a great time and I assured Tracy that we will be back for the 2009 event!

A spare moment to blog ...

At the Desert Scrappers retreat this weekend with the WhoGAS girls (Who Gives a Scrap!) I am on the top right.

WOW! Has it been that long since I blogged?! Jeez! Time is flying by in 2008 already for me! Kits2Remember has just taken off and I am busy with events, classes and, oh yeah, family life! Not to mention my DH and Director of Operations has been training in Mississippi, so I've been a "single Mom" up until this week, although I did have some help from my DPs (Dear Parents!). This past weekend K2R hot the road and headed to the scrub brush for the Desert Scrappers retreat in Palm Springs. I actually did get some cropping done in between the classes I taught and showing different techniques to croppers throughout the weekend. Acrylic, Stickles, Grungeboard and Ranger paint dabbers were some of the big hits with the croppers ...

Tuesday night I will be teaching my "Clearly in Love" 6 x 6 acrylic album class at the Red Bee from 6-8 p.m. You can find out more about it on my calendar: , as well as info about other classes I am teaching around SoCal. Your local store may be one of the ones kind enough to host me!

This weekend is the first-ever ScrapFest San Diego at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Activity Center. The event is SOLD OUT and I hear there are more than 200 croppers attending each day! K2R will be there, plus I am teaching a purse and album class on Saturday from 5-7 p.m. for those croppers who are interested. You can check out more about that on my calendar, too.

Let's welcome a new store to the SoCal area!

Times have been tough for the scrapbooking industry lately, and especially tough on local scrapbook stores. It seems like there is a new one closing every week, for one reason or another. A few months ago we heard about Table Scrapz in Placentia closing and I don't know about you, but my thoughts were, "Oh, no ... another one bites the dust!" But out of the dusty ashes of Table Scrapz has risen a new, fresh scrapbook store in the same location: The Scrappin' Table. Store owner Michelle is excited, motivated and gracious and I encourage you to stop on in when you have a chance. Product is being added to the store every day (after a brief delay thanks to the midwest ice storms!) and it looks like Michelle, with the help of her scrappy friend Tiffany, is buying nothing but the latest and greatest.

Pantone's Color of the Year

There is something about color that inspires me. Especially when they are all organized and , ahem, color-coordinated. I am attracted to paint chip displays at hardware stores, new boxes of crayons and pencils, my stash of organized cardstock...

I love it when Pantone comes out with its annual color. Will we see it in more scrap stuff? Do I feel the need to paint something this color? I find the description humorous, especially when thinking from an average Jane's perspective. This Blue Iris, to me, is a bright purpley blue. But to Pantone, it is a whole lot more and represents where 2008 will be heading. See if you agree ...

Whew .. I am finally getting around to doing the samples that I have desperately needed to get done! The small blue book is a make and take for Auntie Amy in Riverside. I will be at the Heirloom Stamp Show there Jan. 25 and 26.
My "Clearly in Love" 6 x 6 acrylic album has already been sold out to the stores and you can see my schedule for those classes on my calendar. But I still had more stores to teach at, so I had to come up with another project! "Sweet Valentine" is an 8 x 8 acrylic album and I have, so far, have it scheduled at the new store, The Scrappin' Table in Placentia Jan. 23. The other two projects I will be teaching at the Desert Scrappers retreat Jan. 11-13 in Palm Springs. Handmade Holiday gifts ...

In this day and age, handmade gifts just aren't given often enough. I have been lucky to receive two handmade gifts so far this year. Scott Ogle (my DH's poker pal and hubby to my scrappy friend Judy) drilled a hole near the bottom of a wine bottle and fed Christmas lights into it. I really like this simple holiday decor item and have it displayed in my living room where I can see it all the time. The second gift is also in my living room, on a shelf that is tough to light. But the "Believe" framed shadow box scrapper April Peel of Victorville made me is just simply beautiful. She used embossing beautifully and I had a space available on my shelf - it fits in great with my snow globes and boxer dog Christmas tree! Thanks for thinking of me!

EK is asking for my opinion ....?!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not afraid to express my opinion, and now a scrapbook company is actually asking for it! Wonders never cease!
I have been selected as a member of the EK Success consumer board for 2008! I am sure there are a few hundred of us out there, but this if fun, nevertheless. We will be asked to fill out online surveys, sometimes about products, sometimes not. I am supposed to share the products with other scrappers, so here's the first review:

They sent me the first product, the new Sticko adhesive, in a pink container (yuck! They lost a point of mine there ...). I got the mini adhesive and being the busy scrapbooker I am, this 11 feet of adhesive was gone in a flash! But, the adhesive itself was strong and easy to use, much like an ATG-type double-sided tape. It IS refillable, but I hate refilling too often, hence the reason I use the ATG gun and tape.

So, while this wasn't a huge winner with me, it was still fun filling out the survey and letting EK know my thoughts! Stay tuned for more reviews in the coming months.

"Clearly in Love" Class

"Clearly in Love" is a 6 x 6 acrylic album that features Creative Imaginations paper and embellishments, acrylic shapes (large tag and "love" word), acrylic paint, Stickles, and of course, ribbon! This project has the hubby's stamp of approval for being romantic but not too "girlie," so, hopefully your significant other will agree when you proudly give it to them this Valentine's Day!

I'll be teaching at Expo!

I am excited to announce that I will be teaching at Scrapbook Expo for the first time at the Orange County show in February!
I will have two classes each morning (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), both featuring acrylic projects and promoting my new business venture, Kits2Remember (www.kits2remember.com). I hope to see some friendly faces there since this is my first time teaching at Expo!
One class, “Crystal Clear Home Décor,” will be a 12 x 12 acrylic page, which can be used in an album or as home décor – your choice. The second is “Why I Love You,” a 6 x 6 acrylic album we bind with the Bind-it-All.
For more information about my classes, please log on to ScrapbookExpo.com and click on Orange County. There will be workshop information posted there soon, if it isn’t already. Registration begins Dec. 12. I will also be at the San Diego, Ontario and Sacramento Expos, as well!
Kits2Remember will also have a booth there, and I plan to have acrylic covers, albums and shapes available in bulk, as well as chipboard in all the scrappy sizes. I am also working on getting some new and different mini book product in so that I, hopefully, have some stuff you’ve never seen – and can’t resist!
I will also need some teacher’s pets for my two classes each day. I believe the deal with Expo is a free class kit for your assistance, and I’d be happy to throw some acrylic in there as well. I also need a couple of scrappers to help out in the booth in the mornings while I am in class. I would be happy to trade you your time for lots of product. It is preferable that you have experience with the Bind-it-All and Crop-a-dile so you can easily help others who don’t. Whew! It's finished!

I have been pretty quiet on line this week because, when I am not working, I am in the garage, finishing up my labor of love, this roughly 8 x 5.5-foot canvas mural for my living room wall. It is actually four main peices that I have joined together in layers. I have had the idea for this for over a year - it was just trying to find the time to do it! I promised myself that I would start it Thanksgiving weekend, which I did. I think it took about 20 hours to do, not including organizing the materials and photos. You will note that that top left corner is a little bare. I need to get some good pictures of Rodney's parents when we visit them later this month. I plan on video taping my description of it soon, and if I can get the technology to work properly, posting it here. So keep an eye out for that!

New computer!

I have a new laptop, with a huge screen and it's GREEN! Yeah, I stupidly spent an extra $25 so that I could have a green laptop. Since K2R's logo is green, I thought I would continue the theme through to my PC. And the standard black just seemed so boring. I love the computer, it is just a pain having to reinstall programs and reset settings the way I like. Windows Vista is a challenge, too. I still can't find the "print" button, but at least the keyboard commands still work the same!

The Red Bee's Gallery Night

The Red Bee in Tustin had their Holiday Open House and Gallery tonight to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. Scrappy Nan and I had both donated to each enter one of our projects in the gallery, to be put on display and voted on by store patrons. Nan and I tied for first place in the Altered Item category! If you guys know us at all, you will know whose project is whose ... and remember I am not a big fan of fluffy, glitzy, girly things! :) We each got a certificate for Bee Bucks to spend at the store ... plus bragging rights. LOL! Plus, scrap celebrities had donated their works of art to be placed up for a silent auction. I bid on the autographed mini book from Tim Holtz and won! I gave it to DH Rodney since he is such a big fan of the man's work. I figured we can out some scrappy photos of us in it, such as Rodney using a pocket knife to work on his Scrap Expo class layout - ha!

I have been selected as a Daisy D's finalist!

I am so excited! I am one step closer to joining the Daisy D's design team! I received an email today saying that I was a finalist for their design team call and to send my top three layouts/projects to them via email. I wasn't sure how fast they needed them, so I sent them right away. Here is what I sent ... I could only send three ... I hope I sent ones that would show my versatility and creativity!
