Checking out the new Iwakuni airport...

Tuesday night the Guthries headed to the new Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport, which, as the crow flies, is about a quarter mile from our apartment. However, due to things like fences, gates and razor wire, we actually had to drive about two miles around the base to get to the airport... but it was still a much easier and cheaper drive than the two hours on the expressway to Hiroshima!

The airport opened in December and has four flights to and from the Tokyo Haneda airport. I wasn't sure how many people to expect on the plane that arrive, but the 50 I estimated to walk off the plane was more than I thought there would be.

We arrived about 20 minutes early and immediately found the outdoor observation deck, where we got to watch the plane come in to the gate. Here is the link to an 8-minute video of what we saw... including the excitement over Grandma Peggy and Aunt Jill's arrival.
